Last Man Out Poor Man Fight Book 5 eBook Elliott Kay Reviews
- Picked this up shortly after it came out. I always buy his books because he delivers - whether its comedy, drama, action, whatever.
Since it had been awhile, I sat down with my tablet and re-read all the previous books. Worth the effort in itself, as the books hold up quite well on a second reading. That took me several days as I did have to work.
Last Man Out is another fantastic action-adventure in the Corporate - Archangel universe. And it delivers.
It helps if you know the players, which is why I re-read the earlier stories. But I think even if you came in cold, Elliott has included a list of players to help people new to the series keep everyone straight. Not that I didn't previously recall Tanner, Gunny, Alicia, Lynnette, the Admiral, Vanessa, or several other characters, but the supporting cast is huge. And he sets up low-key teasers about unfinished story arcs, letting us know the story isn't finished, not by a long shot. (In book 3, a certain prisoner escapes from a military prison...)
The price is surprisingly low, but no less amazing for all that. You get a long novel for your money here, and the introduction of a major new villain onto the galactic stage. And like Alicia Wong in the previous novel, we see Tanner Malone standing by his moral compass, refusing to take shortcuts, and leaping into the fray to protect others. Andrea Bennett had her chance, and now it's Lynette's turn. Though I would not be surprised to learn that Vanessa would snatch him up if he were suddenly at loose ends again. Yeah. Another winner. 5* and highly recommended. Buy it and prepare to lose a weekend in stellar fun. - PRO How good the book is? I read it in 2 days, except for the last few pages. I took a day per each one of those final pages, knowing that it was almost over and that I will have to wait long until the next book...
The characters are not only believable, they are real.
Of course, Tanner is still the center of the story (although Alicia still steals the attention in some key moments) and it is A GREAT CHARACTER. Thoughtful inner dialogue, good storytelling and, above all, a comprehensive story arc that involves the previous books in several unexpected avenues.
CONS (not really, just something to align expectations) while the plot is similar in essence the previous books, there are some aspects to consider
1. the geopolitical component is smaller here is less relevant.
2. there are some military combat scenes, but most of the story involves individuals (hard to say more without giving away spoilers) - Sci-fi is my first love, but I was never a huge fan of military sci-fi until I stumbled onto the Poor Man's Fight series. Now I'm completely hooked.
Last Man Out sees the return of Tanner Malone, the reluctant hero from the first trilogy, but now Tanner is trying to return to civilian life, but his reputation has turned him into a pariah. In an attempt to live as a normal person, he agrees to join an archeological dig on a corporate planet, but even there, he can't escape conflict, or the need to protect the helpless.
I can honestly say this story hit me as hard as the very first one, and that's not often the case for the 5th book in a series. I. Love. it. - I rarely give 5-star ratings anymore. This is one of them. I have really fallen for this series and I loved this one as well. I learned to not see the stories critically concerning realism, but rather in a sort of Marvel superhero-movie kid of way. It cannot be done any other way having Tanner in the middle of the big, world-changing events and still, somehow getting away against all odds.
So, I still love the characters and the complex political intrigue behind the events. I also loved, how reading the previous spin-off novel, starring Alicia complemented the story here quite well.
I hope there are still some books in this series because I would have to see it end.
I recommend it to all Poor Man's Fight lovers (obviously), also to any military/action sci-fi fans. It's a fast-paced, action-driven, fun story. - The first three books were a self-contained trilogy. The fourth was a "side story" featuring supporting characters from the trilogy. This fifth book returns to Tanner in his new, post-military life. We get to see what the galaxy is like after Archangel's war, and the difficulties of civilian integration. There's also aliens.
The fourth book introduced the alien races of the setting, this book elaborates on them, their history, and the complex and not always peaceful history between them and fractious humanity. And, of course, there's a lot of Tanner being forced to reluctantly be the ass-kicking hero the Archangel military molded him into being.
A solid entry into the series. If you liked the others, you'll like this one. - Some people come looking for trouble, some people have trouble come looking for them. Tanner attempts to lay low going back to college but a few people have other ideas about that happening. Action is non stop from the beginning to the end of this exquisite collection of adventure military mayhem . Aliens a s the main antagonists along with the those humans e foolish enough to think they can get the better of a fast thinking and faster acting hero like our man make this the favorite so far in my opinion of all the Kay novels. A great long read well worth paying much more for.
- Elliot Kay is a gem writer. I love his books. This one start slowly and not focused but once it’s get going it’s hard to let go. I wish that E K will write more and more often. His talent to keep me up at night is great. He is one of the few authors that writes an interesting narrative when his protagonists think, which I usually skip out of boredom, but not here. Tanner Malone is my kind of guy and I look forward to see him more and perhaps content and happy.
Great opening of the next chapter of adventures after the war.
